If I Try To Install Xine In My Linux Systems I Do Not Have Permissions To While I Have Logged On As Root.?
Author: admin // Category: LinuxI am using Ubuntu which is debian based. If I use apt-get install command I get an error message that /var could not be locked. If I use tar -xvf command it is ok it extracts well but when I reach a step where I have to install it, I do not have permissions to do that. I get this error message “permission denied” so what to do.And I am always root. I have tried chmod 777 /var but it seems not to work.So what to do?

I am a newbie. I don’t know any of linux command line. I just use synaptic package manager to install or uninstall linux stuff.
I can install Gxine and watch my DVD movie without any problem, because I install it from synaptic.
Maybe if you want to install from command line:
sudo apt-get install gxine

In Ubuntu, root isn’t actually the root account. Do all your superuser work by adding ’sudo’ before the command. then it will work

First of all, You DO NOT WANT TO ALWAYS BE ROOT…That is not at all secure and it is a very good way to break your system. Second, NEVER set /var to be wide open like that. /var is where all your log files are and if you open it up crackers can easily cover their tracks.
Now, to your question. You need to log in as a regular user and use sudo as stated above. “sudo apt-get install xine*” will download all the required packages.
