Why Is It So Hard To Get A Real Person On The Phone These Days?

I just called Vodafone to ask them something, followed the stupid voice prompts for about 5 mins before being offered an option I was interested in and then waited half an hour just to be told they were currently experiencing technical difficulties. GRRRRR!!!!! Has anyone experienced this recently and are there any good ideas on seeking absolute vengeance?
