I need to validate a text box to make sure it contains only letters or numbers, and starts with a letter (no spaces!)
I’m using this to help prevent both unexpected errors and SQL Injection - basically a user will be creating an account, and then that account name will be taken and a table will be created in a MySQL database bay that name.
The only part I need help with is validating. Although I’m usually very adament on both understanding and creating myself any coding I use on my sites, I’d be willing to bend that if anyone can offer guidance here, or recommend me to a site that could help me out.
I want to validate with a CGI script, not a JavaScript, because that could easily be bypassed.

I am on a PAYG phone. I topped up to £5 credit - I was sent two messages from a premium rate text and I did’nt read - just deleted them. Now I have 90p left and this has been going on for ages. I don’t know how I get them, but I need to block them. Try and get through to Vodafone very difficult! Any ideas? Thank you xx

I have the following query for mysql but it keeps giving me an error and I am not sure why

I realize that I am not gaurding against the SQL injection I was plugging value in for testing.
the problem is in the where statement
1064 - You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ‘where p.products=’8574′ and pd.products_id=’p.products_id” at line 1
