If you are doing manual partitioning, you will have to give the mount point / (forward slash) to a partition. This is the root directory. I’m not sure about the minimum size, guess its 5 GB to be on the safer side.

Another partition of size 2 x RAM should be defined as swap.

If you don’t want to loose data when you format again later, make a BIG home partition to store docs, music, video etc. Give it mount point /home.

You don’t have to install linux to run it. If you have the disk then just put the disk in and restart the computer and then it’ll ask you to choose the operating system to use. There will be linux and windows xp. If you choose linux and boot up with linux the computer will be booting up from the CD drive so don’t take the disk out while booting up with it.

You need to define root (/) file system. It would be best if you install Ubuntu for first time and choose resizing one of the partitons.
