I read many stories online of hackers doing this or hackers doing that. Its manily in other countrys but in england where i am from you do not hear much about hackers in the media (tv,news etc).
I have heard a few cases and they take the hackers or law breakers pc away analize it to get evidence.
My questions are if the hacker or law breaker has erased their hard drive using dod or gutman standards (35 passes) could they still recover such data?.Would i be correct in thinking that
These so called hackers are stupid for not nuking their hard drives before they get caught or not not encrypting their pc with the best type of encryption and for not using someone elses internet connection to hack.
by hacking i mean a black hat hacker the kind that would break in to accounts and steal sensative data and spread their programs.
Also what is the law surrounding hacking.Ever since i saw the film hackers i find stuff like that interesting to read about i would never take it up.

The only guaranteed way to remove all recoverable data from a magnetic drive is to physically destroy it. Data can potentially still be recovered from a DOD or other numerous data pass format using an electron scan microscope. Most people probably don’t take precautions as they assume they won’t get caught. Hacking falls under the DCMA.

The problem with the “dumb hackers” is that they dont know theyre about to get busted
Thats how the authorities have the upper hand….they do random raids. The hackers dont have time to “nuke”

Answer: No. Btw, DoD is 7 passes.

A black hat will never get caught. They know how to cover their tracks. They are very good. On one hand you can appreciated their ability and on the other hand be so pissed off because they can do what they want and not get caught.

They can trace your IP address to your home. That at least makes you prime suspect.

The highest security requirements for destroying HDDs are to remove the platters from the drive and dissolve them in concentrated nitric acid, so someone in power somewhere thinks that overwriting 35 times isn’t enough.
The acid solution then has to be stored as confidential waste for 25 years.
