Get some protection. Get a firewall and lock your system down as tight as possible. Don’t allow anything access that doesn’t need it, keep your files hidden, password protected if possible, encrypted, and you shouldn’t have any issues with someone trying to steal your data.
Odds are slim that someone will target you directly, you’re more likely to fall for a phishing scheme or spyware acting as a keylogger to steal your data. Just keep all the appropriate protection, anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall and keep them running regularly and you’ll do fine.

Cracker, not Hacker.
Anyway, yes. Firewalls are nice tools, but they’re not the almighty tool people seem to think they are.
Honestly, the answer is to not be vulnerable in the first place. That takes some work.
The first step would be your operating system.
Windows isn’t what you want, if you have something you want protected.
Personally, I’d try Linux
Anyway, you’d want to update when ever you can, no matter what OS.
Software wise, you would always want a firewall, but learn to configure it, don’t leave it at factory standards.
Anti-virus is usally a nice thing, Windows makes this needed, other OS’s, it’s highly recommended.
Now, of course there are viruses for Mac and Linux, it’s just the pure mass of Microsoft that makes them easy targets.
Now, a good browser would always be nice, Bug’s and the like always suck.
*Ponders* There’s really too many things to cover, so I’d say, check around security websites for updates.

There is a lot of good advice already, but I’d add this.
If you have data (personal, financial, business) that you really want to keep from any prying eyes, keep it stored on a flash drive that can encrypt it, and use the encryption. Then take the flash drive with you when you leave the computer, and lock it away someplace safe.

Usually a regular old firewall and some common sense will do the trick if you’re worried about people on the internet. Don’t install any software you don’t trust. A lot of freebie programs you can download online also come with adware or spyware, so only download from reputable sources.
Also, I agree with the above suggestions to avoid pirated software and filesharing. And always remember: your bank will never send you e-mail out of the blue asking you to confirm your personal data and password.

Avoid warez and piracy websites, and maybe certain porn sites as well. Most importantly, don’t use pirated software, it usually contains data to break into the users computer.
