You would most likely have to install the 1.6 (1.6.19) patch and then the 1.61b patch to update battlefield 1942 before mods would work.
Most mods should be self-installing, if not you need to put the files in the mods folder in Program filesEA GamesBattlefield 1942.
Once the mod is installed you should be able to tell what server is running it by the name or icon.
